SOUTH POINT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL-WIDE TITLE I PROGRAM

South Point Elementary is committed to ensuring that every student receives the most effective reading instruction possible. Teachers carefully examine data from classroom work as well as other reading measures including Benchmark Assessment System and FastBridge. When the data shows that a student could use extra support to reach grade-level goals, small group intervention is provided through our school-wide Title l program. The services provided through this program are in addition to daily classroom reading instruction and may include:

1. Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI)

The Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention System is an intensive, small-group, supplementary literacy intervention for students who find reading and writing difficult. The goal of LLI is to lift the literacy achievement of students who are not achieving grade-level expectations in reading.

  • It utilizes a combination of reading, writing, phonics, and word study
  • It has an emphasis on comprehension strategies
  • Attention to the features of fiction and nonfiction texts is emphasized
  • Specific work on sounds, letters, and words in activities are designed to help children notice the details of written language and how language works
  • It has a focus on vocabulary-building
  • Explicit teaching for fluent and phrased reading is applied
2. Read Naturally

Read Naturally is designed to enable students to improve reading fluency. Students who read fluently are able to read smoothly and easily, without pausing to figure out words. As a result, they can focus on meaning rather than word recognition when they read. Read Naturally has three components: teacher modeling, repeated reading, and progress monitoring. It is based on several research-based theories including the following:

  • Students become good readers by reading
  • Reading along with a more proficient reader improves word recognition and reading fluency
  • Reading a passage several times improves fluency
  • Self-monitoring of progress improves reading achievement
3. Reading Intervention for Students to Excel (RISE/RISE UP)

The framework for RISE/RISE UP is based on Jan Richardson’s extensive study of guided reading. This intervention focuses on using close reading passages to help students confidently, proficiently, and independently process increasingly challenging texts.

  • Students engage in authentic reading and writing
  • Close reading is a strategy where students read and reread short, complex text to improve comprehension
  • Comprehension strategies include, but are not limited to identifying main idea and important details, making inferences, summarizing, drawing conclusions, analyzing relationships between characters and ideas, and evaluating author’s purpose
