Special education is specially designed instruction, support, and services provided to students with an identified disability requiring an individually designed instructional program to meet their unique learning needs. The purpose of special education is to enable students to successfully develop to their fullest potential by providing a free appropriate public education in compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

A child can qualify for special education if he or she's learning is significantly impacted because of mental, physical and/or emotional disabilities. A student must be evaluated and determined eligible for special education. A student may be found eligible for special education and related services in one or more of the thirteen (13) disability categories:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Blind or Low Vision
  • Cognitive Disability
  • Deaf or Hard of Hearing
  • Deaf-Blind
  • Developmental Delay
  • Emotional Disability
  • Language or Speech Impairment
  • Multiple Disabilities
